Malcolm TullettHello

Chris and I have had a very busy month with a stack of reports to tackle as a result.  Don't you just love paperwork?

We're actively streamlining the business and have also had some very interesting discussions this month with potential joint venture partners.  The outcomes should develop into some strategies and tools that will make life simpler and more straightforward for us and for our clients.

This month we've added a feature to highlight both best practice and the things to avoid - see the Safe-cracker and You're nicked! entries below!

Getting the balance right

Visiting a wide range if businesses I see all sorts of approaches to occupational health and safety.  Some people take the ostrich approach, burying their heads in the sand until they get a 'visit'; others use the belt, buttons and braces approach - along with yards of paperwork for the staff to manage.

Which one works?  Neither! Business is about payback and this means that it's important to make H&S activities contribute to the bottom line.  That's why we developed PROPA - to help businesses to embrace the contribution an proactive and integrated approach to health and safety can make.

My keynote presentation is called 'Crazy about Risk', because I believe that there is nothing wrong with risk - in fact taking a few risks keeps you on your toes.  Managing risk is the key to creating balance in any workplace - assess what the risks are and then decide what must be done and what doesn't need to be done.

By all means protect your staff, but you don't need to wrap them in cotton wool.  Being an entrepreneur or a senior manager is about risk; no matter what stage the company is at business entails risk – but few people see health and safety as a risk management exercise.  They take financial risks, they make decisions all the time that have integral risk - what if it's the wrong decision?  Everyday business operation is about risk - so why is health and safety different?

Yes, take action to create a safe place to work and for people to visit, but just the belt is needed, don't worry about buttons and braces too!

This company in the USA has obviously worked out that an integrated approach to risk management across all their divisions is worth real money.

Workplace absence manager - look at how this assesses the impact of activities across the whole organisation.  They've definitely cracked it!

You're nicked!

There have been a few companies who think that nobody is going to notice that they haven't done a thing about health and safety - and then they get hit with a fine.  These are the basics and the investment of a few hundred pounds would have saved this sports retailer a few thousand.

National sports retailer fined

Don't get caught out - make sure you've done your risk assessments and covered the basics.  If you think you might get away with it read this Bill - due to get Royal Assent shortly.

The cost of getting it wrong to increase from £5K to £20K.
